Honokowai and Kahana occupy a roughly 3-mile stretch of Lower Honoapiilani Road between Ka'anapali to the south and Napili Bay to the north. The area is characterized almost entirely by low-rise oceanfront and ocean-view condominiums — many of them family-owned units that have been renting to repeat visitors for decades. There are no major resort towers here, which means fewer crowds at the beach, lower noise levels, and a more residential pace of life. Pohaku Park in Honokowai offers a protected baby beach ideal for young children and beginning snorkelers, and a small grassy park right on the water where locals and visitors mingle in the evenings. Several excellent local restaurants line the main road, including some of Maui's best casual fish tacos and shave ice stands.

From Kahului Airport the drive to Honokowai takes approximately 45–55 minutes. The route follows Honoapiilani Highway along the dramatic North Shore pali before descending past Lahaina and continuing north along Lower Honoapiilani Road. Kahana is a few minutes further north. The narrow two-lane road through Honokowai and Kahana runs right along the ocean in places — a scenic final stretch after a long travel day.
